A study of one of the group of eight scuptures around the Parterre D’eau at the Chateau de versailles.

The sculptor Pierre Granier (1635-1715) was commissioned in 1685 and completed the project 1690.

The casting was done by Aubry,Bonvalet , Schabo and Taubin.

At various times over the years these statues and been removed from Versailles and subsequently re instated.

There is only one watercolour , possibly of the Parterre Versailles, fully attributed to John Singer Sargent.

Having lived in Paris for many years and inspired by parks, their statues, architecture and fauna, Sargent appears to have not been inspired by Versailles. Maybe he thought the Chateau was so vast , it lacked texture

and form  for his style.
