Painted a few years after Laura Knight first moved to Cornwall in 1907 with her husband Harold.

They moved from Staithes , where they were part of the Staithes group of artists, to near Newlyn where they hoped to capture a better light and colours. In Newlyn they became friends with the artists from the Newlyn School in particular Samuel John Lamorna Birch and his family.

Laura Knights watercolours and oil were transformed by this new environment. Laura painted the coast and it’s visitors and not the locals, unlike the members of the Newlyn School.

Laura placed her figures on cliffs above the sea and pools among the rocks. During her stay in Cornwall , Knight produced some of her best work.
