WF Garden was part of a family of painters who mainly worked in Cambridgeshire. William Fraser Garden worked in watercolours. Painting scenes on the Ouse and Cam, Fraser’s works have wonderful detail, colour and accuracy of location. Not a man who needed to always paint a sunny day, the atmosphere in his watercolours catches the calm and flow of a river scene. In this beautiful watercolour, the greys and greens reflect in the river, and the Mill is precise in its depiction. The red bricks of the wall of a garden are the only red in the watercolour, apart from the signature, drawing your eye in from across the river. Fraser Garden was a master of composition, mixing Victorian and Dutch techniques with great skill.
