Modernist John Craxton spent many years in Crete, where he drew inspiration from the people and it’s traditions and myths. He first went to greece in 1946 with his friend Lucien Freud.

Craxton settled into Greek life with ease and lived there more on than off for the rest of his life.

His subject matter reflected life and the people of Crete. He painted the locals , their animals, the dancers and their toil.

Many years later, circa 2001, I met him in London in his Hampstead home, still painting  colourful beautiful paintings , perparing for a one man show , some time soon.
