The Cumberland Fleet was the precursor to the Royal Thames Yacht Club. Created by the Duke of Cumberland, brother to George III in 1775, to race from Blackfriars up the Thames to Putney and other races on the river. This shows the Fleet in full sail and a flotilla of other boats, including a boat with the Cumberland cup on dislpay. The Royal Thames Yacht Club was formed in 1823.
In the background, from left to right, are the spires of St. Bride Fleet st. , St Andrew of the Wardrobe, St Martin Ludgate, St Paul’s, St Mary Le Bow and St Stephen Walbrook.
