Oil on card , 11 1/2 ins x 6 1/2

Sargent visited Niagara Falls in 1890 . He painted two watercolours , which are listed in the catalogue Raisonne. One was in the Collection of Dr John Elliot the other was in the Fairchild Collection.

This oil was from the collection of Colonel  W. H. Olivier , who lived in Ashford House , Derbyshire.

The similarity between this oil and the two watercolours is striking, there is the same tone of yellow in the swirling waters .

Having just visited The Lady Lever Gallery and seen Sargent’s oil of the “On his holidays, Norway” where the same brushstrokes are used in the swirling currents.

I have attached an image of one of the watercolours.
